2009 -- This year marks UMCOR's 15th year of working in Armenia under its current mission of assisting in socio-economic development and eradicating poverty so that the country can grow into a wealthy civil society. Special recognization will be made by UMCOR Armenia of its 15th anniversary. Check back to find out more.
July 2009 -- A team of Americans will travel to UMCOR Armenia under the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) program. This grassroots program enables people of all walks of life and persuasion to travel abroad to help others. Team members pay their own travel, lodging, food, transportation and translator costs. Each team member makes a contribution towards a project it selects to work on while in Armenia. Each team's project varies by the talents individual members bring to the team. Past projects have included renovation of a meeting/activity room at Gavar Special School, painting the interior of a Habitat for Humanity home near Areni, working on a clinic at Pokr Mher orphanage/boarding school outside Yerevan, and renovating a gym at the Areni school. Teams also get to travel around Armenia, seeing significant historic and early Christian sites, as well as connecting with local people to make a difference. Roughly, each team member spends about $2,600 for all this. For more information about joining a team or organizing a team to come to Armenia, email UMVIM Coordinator Pamela Karg, an UMVIM volunteer herself at UMCOR, at pamela@umcor.am
