Welcome

On December 7, 1988, a devastating earthquakes occurred in Armenia, killing more than 25,000 people. Shortly thereafter, the former Soviet Union collapsed, creating significant economic hardships. This turmoil was followed by a three-year war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed ground of Nagorno Karabakh, which cost more than 30,000 lives. These events resulted in drastic hardship for countless Armenians in its early years of independence.

In the aftermath of these events, the United Methodist Committee on Relief non-governmental organization established offices in Armenia in 1994. Initially UMCOR distributed pharmaceuticals to health institutions and clinics. Gradually it transitioned from relief to more developmental activities, including medium-size agricultural loans, micro-credit and agricultural inputs.

At present, UMCOR Armenia's main focus is on transitional programming. It implements programs with funding for specific projects from donors such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Rabobank, Interchurch Organization for Development Cooperation (ICCO), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Department of State (DOS) and Norwegian Church Aid (NCA).

UMCOR's Mission in Armenia is to assist in socio-economic development and eradicating poverty during Armenian's transition to a healthy and wealthy civil society.
